3 Uncommon Elements of Effective Logo Design

Maybe you’ve already heard of the 5 Principles of Logo Design: in short, every good logo needs to be Simple, Memorable, Enduring, Versatile & Appropriate.

But there are a few things I have found that set a good logo apart from the rest, and I want to share them with you here.

Your logo embodies the Mission/Vision Statement in your Business Plan. Your business answers a need, in you and in your customers… your logo should convey that. Once you have your logo, your visual identity flows from there.

Your brand informs every aspect of your business. Your logo informs your brand (typography, iconography, imagery & color scheme), and your Mission/Vision Statement informs your logo.

Humans are visual by nature. The human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. Your logo is a visual story you’re telling your audience about who you are, and what you care about.

But a good logo doesn’t just represent you, it represents your audience as well… what they like and care about. This is the simplest and easiest way to find your “tribe”, by having a brand that resonates with your core audience.

I learned about the Principles of Design in art school (which every good designer should have an understanding of), but the most important factor I’ve found, is readability… and by THAT I mean simple, clear, eye-catchy, easy-to-read, and conceptually easy to understand.

The best logos you can glance at and immediately know what they represent, where your eye should go, and what they actually say.

  • Whether you’re creating your logo yourself, or hiring a designer to do it for you, remember to keep these in mind, and you’ll end up with a great logo that speaks to your audience, captures the essence of your business, and informs every aspect of your brand identity!
