3 Tools to Retain Audience Engagement Around Your Message

I have been to countless events over the years, but no matter how transformative they were I would return home and lose touch with new friends, stop working on new goals, fall back into old habits, and end up right back where I started.

Most events/programs have no long-term support in place for participants. Without good support, your audience can lose touch with their goals & fall back into old habits & ways of thinking… but what if you could keep them actively engaged well after the event, with minimal time & effort on your part?

Your best customers are the ones you already have.

Marketing to a community of “primed,” dedicated consumers is much easier than trying to generating interest on your mailing list: the probability of selling to customers who are part of an active support system around your content is 60-70% (vs. 5-20% for new prospects).

So how do you create a powerful, self-sustaining support system, without “reinventing the wheel” or “breaking the bank?” Here are 3 tools you can use to keep your audience engaged with you and your message after your events/programs are complete.

The 3 Elements of Complete Support

Every good Support System needs to have these 3 components:

  1. Inspiration: Connecting with the transformational experience
  2. Motivation: Turning inspiration into realistic goals & action steps
  3. Connection: Create change through inspired action & ongoing support

This piece happens primarily during the event: your participants are being inspired by the transformative experience they are all having with each other at the event. What we need to do now is anchor that experience into their journey home. Here are a few ways you can do that:

  • Self-Reflection ~ Do a recap of the event: all the amazing experiences people had, maybe a journaling exercise to help them reflect on what they got out of the event, and what they want to do with that once they get home
  • Re-Integration ~ Have your participants imagine their journey home… what obstacles may come up, how conversations might go once returning, etc.
  • Intention-Setting ~ Before the event, have participants do an activity that lets them set intentions for the experience they want to have at the event, which they can then review during or after in a separate activity

Now we need to turn that inspiration into forward movement. We also need to create a bridge between the event and the post-event support system. Here are a few activities participants can do during and after the event to build that momentum, and bridge the gap:

  • Journaling ~ Have them write about their experience at the event, their new realizations and intentions for creating changes in their lives based on these experiences
  • Goal-Planner ~ Hand out a Goal-Planning worksheet or workbook at the event, and walk people through creating some realistic goals, milestones & steps they can start moving towards to turn their new commitments into accomplishments in their day-to-day lives.
  • Completions ~ Celebrate achievements! Give people an incentive for accomplishing their goals… maybe it’s a discount on upcoming events, or some other kind of gift, and encourage them to share their accomplishments with each other & on social media

This is arguably the most important part of the equation, and equally important to integrate into the end of your event: get your participants plugged into a support system AT your event, so people have an action plan already in place when they go back home. Here are a few ideas:

  • Accountability ~ Have people pair up at the event (or after) and connect with each other around their goals/intentions, ask for support (accountability, advice, etc.) and make a commitment to each other around continued check-ins on their goal-progress
  • Support Group Facebook groups, e-Courses, Online Communities & Members Areas: a place people can go to stay connnected to you and each other, to help bring that experience back into their day-to-day lives
  • Connections ~ Find some way to have your event participants keep connecting with each other, whether it’s monthly audio/video calls or in-person meetings (if you’re local), to continue to support each other around their goal-planning & progress.
